Single Rope Technique Basics: Rigging Your First Pitch Safely
Single rope technique — SRT for short — is the method most vertical cavers use to get up and down a pitch today. Unlike a climbing belay, where a partner controls your rope from the ground, SRT has each caver descend and ascend the same fixed rope independently, using their own descender and ascenders. It's efficient, it scales well to deep multi-pitch systems, and it demands real training before anyone should trust it with their life.
The basic idea: one fixed rope, worked two ways
A rope is rigged from an anchor at the top of a pitch down to the bottom, usually with some slack removed and secured with a stopper knot near the end. Going down, a caver clips a descender — a friction device such as a rack or a bobbin — onto the rope and controls their speed by how much they grip the rope below the device. Going up the same rope, a caver instead uses a pair of ascenders, mechanical devices with a cam that grips the rope in one direction and slides freely in the other, alternating their weight between a chest-mounted ascender and a hand ascender attached to a foot loop to inchworm upward.
Because the rope is fixed at both ends (or rigged to be self-tensioned) rather than paid out by a belayer, there's no second person required to manage your safety on the pitch — which is exactly why the technique needs to be bombproof in every other respect.
Why the anchor and rigging matter more than the gear
New cavers often focus on their harness and descender, understandably, since that's the gear they're touching. But the part of the system that actually determines whether the trip goes well is the rigging: where the rope is anchored, how it's routed, and whether it avoids rub points.
A rope rubbing against a sharp limestone edge under load can be cut through in a surprisingly short time, especially if there's any movement or bounce. Good rigging routes the rope clear of edges using natural line-of-sight, or adds a deviation — a second, lighter anchor point that pulls the rope sideways away from the hazard — or, where the rope must pass close to rock, pads the contact point. Rebelays serve a related purpose: rather than one continuous 40-metre hang brushing against the wall the whole way, a rebelay re-anchors the rope partway down at a clean point, breaking the pitch into two clean, rub-free hangs.
Backup and redundancy: assume something will go wrong
SRT technique is built around the assumption that any single component can fail, so nothing is ever the only thing keeping you attached to the system. A cows-tail — a short, strong sling clipped from your harness to a separate point on the rope or anchor — is used to stay clipped in whenever you're not actively moving on the descender or ascenders, such as while passing a rebelay or a knot. You are, in effect, never unclipped from something solid, even for the few seconds it takes to swap from one piece of gear to the next.
The same logic extends to anchors themselves. Where possible, riggers use two independent anchor points for the top of a pitch rather than one, so that a single bolt failure or a single weak piece of rock doesn't turn into a dropped rope. This is often called back-tying or a Y-hang, and it's standard practice on any pitch where the consequences of a single-point failure would be serious.
Why this is a trained-skill article, not a how-to
Every sentence above describes real technique, but none of it substitutes for hands-on instruction. SRT involves genuine consequence for genuine mistakes — an ascender fitted backward, a descender loaded incorrectly, a cows-tail left unclipped at the wrong moment — and the only reliable way to internalize the muscle memory and judgment that avoids those mistakes is supervised practice, first on a practice tower or short pitch, then progressively on real trips with an experienced mentor.
