The disease is characterized by a progressive decline in cognitive function, leading to memory loss, confusion, and disorientation. Alzheimer’s disease is a complex and multifaceted disease, and its causes are not fully understood. However, several factors are known to contribute to its development, including genetics, lifestyle, and environmental factors. The disease is most commonly diagnosed in people over 65, with the risk increasing with age.
Akau’s grandmother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s at age 65 and passed away at age 75. Akau’s experience with her grandmother’s illness, coupled with her passion for walking, led her to become a volunteer with the Alzheimer’s Association. Akau’s journey began with a simple act of kindness: offering to walk with her grandmother.

Akau, a member of the Chamber of Commerce, was invited to join the association’s committee. He was excited to contribute his skills and experience to the association’s mission. The association’s mission is to promote healthy lifestyles and support local businesses.
Akau later became the chair of the Hawaii Island Alzheimer’s walk and persevered through the virtual and hybrid events of the COVID-19 pandemic by continually shattering goals, which includes becoming the first neighbor island to raise over $100,000 last year. “I am so proud of what we have accomplished and the difference we have made in our fight against Alzheimer’s and all other forms of dementia,” Akau said. “The association continues to serve Hawaii Island with robust care programs and a dedicated team of individuals who have been touched by Alzheimer’s and serve alongside me and our community in our fight for a brighter future.”
Akau’s grandmother, a strong and independent woman, instilled in her a deep sense of compassion and resilience. She was a single mother who raised her children with unwavering dedication and love. Akau’s grandmother’s strength and determination were evident in her ability to overcome challenges, such as battling cancer and raising her children while working multiple jobs.
